Did the School Board Get It Wrong?

It's a unique situation. This election we have two candidates running that previously went before the our School Board in an appointment process: Jake Rambo and Steve Ly.
The decision was unanimous.
Now we are asked to make the same decision that our board voted on last March. Either the board got it right the first time, or they were unanimously dead wrong. Which was it?
Today you can listen to every word spoken by those two candidates Steve Ly and Jake Rambo at that hearing:. You can also hear every word spoken about them by the school board, and see every page submitted in their applications. (Public records. See Below)
This doesn't just speak to this election, but to how our board makes decisions. The current campaign could be seen as a vote of  “confidence/no confidence” in how our board does business.
It's a hard look at how the school board appointed a board member. Good or Bad, YOU decide. “Did they get it wrong?”
Let's look into it together.

Jake Rambo Answers Tough Questions

Is the School Board a rubber stamp? How can we fix labor problems? We ask Jake Rambo.
In this Edition:
Trustee Jake Rambo was appointed by the sitting School Board, yet many of his endorsers call him the independent voice for the board. Up for public election next week, we interview Mr. Rambo in-depth. We ask many of the tough questions that have been bothering voters, and put him to the test.
Meet the Candidate – Jake Rambo, on today's RadioElkGrove. Let's look into it together.

Jake Rambo is an administrative law judge for the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board, and was appointed last March to fill the seat of mid-term retiree from the EGUSD Board of Trustees Priscilla Cox. Now, just 8 months later, Rambo seeks approval of the voters for the decision handed down by the School Board at his appointment proceeding. Interesting is the fact that his lone opponent was one of the appointment candidates at that time, Steve Ly, who we interviewed in a live program in September. (Click Here)
We met with Mr. Rambo at his Mock Trial classroom at Elk Grove High, where for many years he has trained young people for Regional, State, and National law competitions. Rambo pointed with pride to the many awards his teams have won, and the high percentage of his former students that have entered highly competitive fields – not just law, but medicine, engineering, and others.
We asked Mr. Rambo what moved him to apply for the board appointment last March that has led to this election bid.

Our thanks to Jake Rambo, candidate for EGUSD Board Area 6 this next election. You can connect to the Rambo Campaign at www.ramboegusd.com RadioElkGrove also has a live, call-in show with Mr. Rambo's opponent Steve Ly as well as all the candidates for school board from Candidates Night.

The following is a complete recording of the School Board Debate, recorded September 17th, 2012 as part of “Candidates Night”.

In a one hour forum, 7 candidates running to fill 3 seats on the Elk Grove Unified School Districts Board of Trustees answer questions from local reporters and the audience. Though not a majority, the election of 3 out of 7 board members can have a major impact on local education, making this one of the most important forums of the next four years.

We want to thank the sponsors of the event: The Elk Grove News, The Elk Grove Patch, and the SacramentoBee for making this recording possible.

We re-join the session as they return from their break.

The Area 6 seat is presently held by Jacob Rambo who Ly is challenging for the seat.

Ly is a local educator, working with foster youth with the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE). He also worked promoting anti-bullying with SCOE, and as a substitute teacher for one  year in the Elk Grove District.

Ly previously ran unsuccessfully for the school board in 2002 and he applied for the Area 6 seat last spring after Trustee Pam Irey resigned due to health issues.  Rambo was appointed by the board at that time.
Ly publicly criticized the Board of Trustees in a quote by the Elk Grove Citizen at his campaign kickoff event last week, apparently referring to the labor issues that have plagued the district recently.

“You have the fighting that’s going on, and at the same time the ones who should be at the helm have forgotten that the bottom line here is we have to provide for our students,” he said.

We'll talk to Candidate Ly, and ask him his views on where the district is now, and what he see's for the future.

This is a live, interview/call-in format. You can ask YOUR questions, by phone or internet chat.
Join us for lunch on Friday for the first in what is planned as an ongoing feature on RadioElkGrove..
